Ear surgery, or otoplasty, is usually performed for prominent ears back closer to the head or to reduce the size of large ears.

For the most part, the operation is performed on children between the ages of four and 14 years of age. The mockery and ridicule by the size of the child's ears, which are almost fully grown by age four, is minimized by a procedure of principles. Ear surgery on adults is also possible, and generally no additional risks associated with surgery in an elderly patient, partly because the ears are now fully grown.

A small percentage of patients may develop a blood clot in the ear. It may dissolve naturally or can be removed with a needle.

There is a small probability that an infection in the cartilage may develop, sometimes the scar tissue. These infections are usually treated with antibiotics, rarely, surgery may be necessary to drain the infected area.

Physicians and surgeons in general, encourage parents to be vigilant about to your child's feelings about their own protruding ears, do not insist on the surgery until your child wants the change, urging the children to continue with the procedure could increase self-esteem, awareness of their ears. Children who are uncomfortable with the size of their ears and want the surgery are in generally more cooperative during the process and happier with the result.
