otoplasty

Ear surgery, or otoplasty, is usually performed for prominent ears back closer to the head or to reduce the size of large ears.

For the most part, the operation is performed on children between the ages of four and 14 years of age. The mockery and ridicule by the size of the child's ears, which are almost fully grown by age four, is minimized by a procedure of principles. Ear surgery on adults is also possible, and generally no additional risks associated with surgery in an elderly patient, partly because the ears are now fully grown.

If you are considering otoplasty, either to you or your child, the following information will help provide a basic description of the procedure, including the conditions that may be able to help with, how the surgery is performed, and what can be expected from the results of the procedure. It can not answer all your questions, since much depends on individual circumstances. Please make sure to ask your doctor or get a consultation with your surgeon about anything you do not understand about the procedure.

When ear surgery is performed by a qualified, experienced surgeon, complications are infrequent and usually minor, if any at all. However, complications, risks associated with surgery, and, as with any surgical procedure, specific potentially arise.

A small percentage of patients may develop a blood clot in the ear. It may dissolve naturally or can be removed with a needle.

There is a small probability that an infection in the cartilage may develop, sometimes the scar tissue. These infections are usually treated with antibiotics, rarely, surgery may be necessary to drain the infected area.

Physicians and surgeons in general, encourage parents to be vigilant about to your child's feelings about their own protruding ears, do not insist on the surgery until your child wants the change, urging the children to continue with the procedure could increase self-esteem, awareness of their ears. Children who are uncomfortable with the size of their ears and want the surgery are in generally more cooperative during the process and happier with the result.

During his first meeting with the surgeon, his condition (or your child) will evaluated and the most effective technique will be recommended. The surgeon will also be able to provide more detailed information and instructions on how you should prepare for surgery.

Your insurance policy may cover an otoplasty procedure. Please check with your insurance company for information more details about coverage.
